What Ghent is all about

Ghent is definitely worth a visit – it can be done in a day as I did, but it is the kind of place you need no rush to take in. Instead you can wander the streets, explore the public spaces, and search for decent fries, waffles etc. The important stuff y’know.

Falling for Mechelen

I dropped a sheepish apology as I checked into my hotel. “First time here?”, “Uh yes, and um, I hadn’t heard of Mechelen before…” I admitted.
“No problem”; she smoothed a map onto the counter and earnestly began circling the city’s attractions… Did you know this compact city had loads to see?

La Roche-en-Ardenne answers your wishes

Today we had our first real Belgian adventure! We set off on a two hour drive to the small town of La Roche-en-Ardenne. The drive was incredibly scenic with rolling hills, sheep grazing, lush forests and fields of golden harvest.

Bouillon, rural pearl in The Ardennes

An oasis in the heavily forested area of rural Belgium, Bouillon sits proudly on the edge of the river Semois. You won’t have to drive far into the town before catching a glimpse of the magical Bouillon Castle, which has presided over the streets below since the Middle Ages.

Perfect weekend getaway Dinant

We visited Dinant for a quick weekend getaway. Dinant is in Wallonia, the French-speaking region of Belgium. It is a lovely little city in the valley of the Meuse River. The steep, narrow valley necessitated the city’s growth to be long and narrow along the banks of the river. It makes quite the picturesque setting.

Too much beauty in Bruges for one day

One thing that struck me during my pre-trip research was that so many people only spend one day in Bruges. Blog posts entitled ‘A day trip to Bruges’ and ‘How to spend 24 hours in Bruges’ are everywhere and plentiful. I’m not sure why people don’t count Bruges worthy of a longer visit but I’m here to tell you it was worth every second of our three nights there.
