More to Budva than beach

Later in the day, I took a walk back inside the Old Town, through the castle and around the stone walls that encircled this magical place. It felt like my hidden paradise, with the best views over the water. The rooftops were covered in kiwi fruit vines, providing much-needed shade to the inhabitants below.

Ljubljana is the perfect weekender

When you think of fantastic city break destinations in Europe, most people think of Barcelona or Venice or Paris. Ljubljana isn’t one of the first places that comes to mind.

It’s only 2 hours away from London by plane, is small enough to get around on foot and is a beautiful city full of really lovely people. And because it’s a small city, you can see it on a weekender. Perfect, right?

Not yet convinced?

Walking the city walls of Dubrovnik

I arrived in Dubrovnik in the peak of Summer. It was so hot, that I found myself lounging around on pebbled beaches, dipping in and out of the Adriatic Sea, eating at least a gelato a day and drinking ice-cold beer until the sun went down.

No modern conveniences in Prokosko Jezero

Located 1670 meters above sea level this shepherd town with no electricity attracts tourists during spring and summer. When winter hits, the entire town is covered in snow forcing the inhabitants to take their flocks and reside in towns at the base of the mountain. The scenic mountaintop is perfect for hiking but don’t expect modern conveniences!

Ostrog Monastery is carved in a cliff

We aren’t here to worship, we aren’t here on a pilgrimage, we are here because this is one of the major cultural attractions in Montenegro. No one has questioned our presence here, in fact the only attention we’ve had is from some Dutch tourists.

The aquamarine pools of Plitvice

Sometimes, words don’t do a place justice, so I will keep this brief. Aquamarine pools, waterfalls bubbling over green moss and water shooting down from the earth like a natural fountain makes this park a truly special place.

Travnik and Jajce, victim to charm

Jajce (pronounced yai-suh) is a 14th century city of history and charm known for its trademark 59 foot waterfall where the Pliva River flows into the Vrbas River. And this isn’t some little trickle: even when standing at the observation points around the base of the falls you’re guaranteed to get misted or even truly soaked.
